Research group reveals 2K’s newest basketball sim the top-selling game last month; total software sales slide 25 percent; Xbox 360 sells 270,000.

The NPD Group reported United States industry sales figures for October today, revealing NBA 2K13 was the best-selling game in a month that saw overall declines. Sales of 2K’s latest professional basketball simulator rose 60 percent over last year’s version in terms of dollars and units. NPD analyst Liam Callahan said this uptick in sales can be contributed to a favorable comparison to last year’s game, which was surrounded by the uncertainty of a lockout.

Nintendo’s new role-playing games Pokemon Black and White 2 were also bright spots for October, helping spur portable softwares to a 37 percent increase year-over-year. Additionally, Callahan said Skylanders Giants performed well during the month, selling over 160 percent more units than last year’s Skylanders game during its debut month.

Overall, total software sales for October fell 25 percent year-over-year to 1.8 million, compared to 5.6 million last year. Callahan attributed this overall downturn to difficult comparisons to October 2011, which saw the release of top-performers Battlefield 3 and Batman: Arkham City.

In terms of hardware, all platforms saw declines year-over-year to the tune of a 37 percent dip. However, the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo DS, and 3DS each saw higher sales over September’s figures. According to Callahan, this is evidence of “increasing momentum” moving into the holiday season.

NPD did not release specific sales figures for hardware, but Microsoft separately revealed that the Xbox 360 shifted 270,000 units during the month. This is more than any other console and marks the system’s 12th consecutive month at the top spot. Microsoft also claimed that the Xbox 360 commands 56 percent of current-generation console marketshare.

Microsoft further added that total retail spend for the Xbox 360 platform during October (which includes hardware, software, and accessories) came in at 5 million.

Looking into November, Callahan said there is reason to be optimistic for software, due to the release of several high-profile games.
·

“While October was another month of steep declines in retail sales, we are looking forward to November 2012 with the results of Assassin“s Creed III, and Halo 4, which were positively reviewed, as well as the results of Call of Duty: Black Ops II,” Callahan said. “These software titles, along with the Wii U launch on November 18, will provide a much needed boost to retail sales.“

Of note, Dishonored was October’s only non-sequel to crack the top ten.

Disney’s new game-centric film earns .1 million in first-weekend sales, besting new Robert Zemeckis flick Flight and Ben Affleck’s Argo.

Game-centric animated film Wreck-It Ralph was the top performer over the weekend at the box office. The Disney movie earned .1 million in sales for the three-day period, according to data from Hollywood.com.

Sales of this caliber boost Wreck-It Ralph past Tangled, which was Walt Disney Animation Studios’ previous record holder at .8 million in first-weekend receipts. Additionally, Wreck-It Ralph‘s debut is Disney’s second number one finish this year, following Brave in June.

Wreck-It Ralph nearly doubled Back to the Future and Cast Away director Robert Zemeckis’ new film Flight, which debuted on the same day and took in million for the number two spot. Ben Affleck’s period thriller Argo came in at number three for the weekend, adding .2 million for a cumulative total of .9 million.

Wreck-It Ralph follows the titular Ralph, a villain in a retro Donkey Kong-style arcade game. After decades of coming out on the losing end, Ralph decides he’s fed up with being hated for doing his job and quits. He takes off to explore other gameworlds, coming across a variety of gaming icons along the way, including Bowser and Dr. Robotnik.

The film stars John C. Reilly (Step Brothers, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape) as Ralph, Sarah Silverman (Jesus is Magic, The School of Rock), Jane Lynch (Glee, The 40 Year Old Virgin), and Jack McBrayer (30 Rock, Forgetting Sarah Marshall).

EA Sports’ pro football sim is month’s best-seller, followed by Borderlands 2 rising 234 percent over original; total software sales down 14 percent year-over-year; Xbox 360 sells 270k holding 49 percent of current-gen market.

Gamers caught football fever in September. The NPD Group reported September industry sales figures for the United States today, revealing Madden NFL 13 as the month’s best-seller. Sales of the new game jumped 11 percent over last year’s iteration.

Another top performer for September was Borderlands 2. It took the number two spot for the month, and bested the first-month sales of the original Borderlands by 234 percent. Specific sales figures were not revealed.

Overall, total software sales were down 14 percent year-over-year. NPD analyst Liam Callahan attributed this downturn to a stronger slate of new titles launching this time last year that included Gears of War 3 and Dead Island.

The retail PC game sector was a bright spot for the month, rising 12 percent year-over-year. This boost was attributed to the high-profile recent launches of World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria, Guild Wars 2, and Diablo III.

Hardware took the biggest hit during September, diving 39 percent year-on-year to 0.9 million. However, Callahan believes there is reason to be optimistic.

“Hardware sales are up on an average sales per week basis compared to August for the NDS, 3DS, PS3, Vita, and 360, which points to momentum heading into the holiday season,“ Callahan said.

NPD did not divulge specific sales figures for hardware, but Microsoft spokesperson Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb chimed in over Twitter, revealing the Xbox 360 moved 270,000 units during September. He claims the Xbox 360 now represents 49 percent of total current-generation console marketshare for the US.

Of note, Electronic Arts titles accounted for 50 percent of September’s best-selling games and no Call of Duty game broke the top ten list.

Lego Batman 2 fends off London 2012 to secure top spot for third consecutive week; Modern Warfare 3 reenters the top 10.

Three weeks on since its release, Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes has held its place on the top of the UK Games Chart. Not only that, but comic book rival The Amazing Spider-Man has fallen one place to third. An 81 percent increase in sales saw London 2012 – The Official Video Game of the Olympic Games replace Spider-Man in second place as the Olympics draw another week closer.

Spec Ops: The Line drops a single place to fourth in its second week of release, while new entry Dead Island Game of the Year Edition hits the chart at five thanks to the addition of all previously released digital content. The Dawnguard expansion supports The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim‘s place in the top 10 at six, where it is followed by chart regular FIFA 12. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3‘s sales grew 193 percent, gaining the shooter 26 places in the chart and landing it back in the top 10 at eight. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier falls three places to nine with FIFA Street scoring the final top 10 spot.

Two other new releases hit the chart this week: Theatrhythm Final Fantasy lands at 19, and new MMO game The Secret World scrapes into the top 40 at 38. Despite UK release on the Wii this week, Beat the Beat failed to chart.

This Friday’s new releases include PS3 exclusive Rainbow Moon (delayed from last week), movie spin-off Ice Age: Continental Drift – Arctic Games, and Parisian rhythm adventure Rhythm Thief & the Emperor’s Treasure for the 3DS.

NPD Group says caped crusader’s latest sells 450,000 while US retail game industry sales plunge 29 percent; Ghost Recon: Future Soldier sneaks into second place.

The gaming industry’s June US retail sales were so bad that not even two Batmen could save them. Despite a top 10 that featured Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes and Batman: Arkham City, the NPD Group today reported that June gaming sales were down 29 percent year-over-year.

The dark knight’s latest Lego tie-in sold 450,000 units across all platforms last month, enough to secure the top spot on the charts. Meanwhile, Batman: Arkham City rode a Game of the Year edition rerelease all the way to the sixth spot on the charts. That was enough to top another super-heroic resurgence, as Activision’s Amazing Spider-Man movie tie-in title debuted in 10th place.

Military shooters were another common sight in the top 10, with Ghost Recon: Future Soldier actually moving up the charts in its second month of release, landing in the number two spot. Last holiday season’s feuding FPS games from Activision and Electronic Arts also kept hostilities up, as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 finished in eighth place, just ahead of Battlefield 3.

The industry completed a difficult first half of 2012, which saw every month post double-digit percentage declines. February has been the best month of the year to date, posting a mere 20 percent slide in industry sales. June continued the trend with hardware sales down 45 percent, and software sales off 29 percent. However, the accessories market continued to post modest gains, up 4 percent year-over-year. NPD analyst Anita Frazier said the accessories numbers have particularly benefitted from a boost in sales of point cards for online services, which have been up 36 percent through the first half of the year.

As for why the industry is struggling so, Frazier pointed out that the first half of the year saw 34 percent fewer titles released than in 2011. While she said the average release is bringing in 2 percent more revenue, the overall dearth of new launches has been contributing to the ongoing declines.

Microsoft also sent out a note heralding the Xbox 360′s performance in June, saying the system sold 257,000 units for the month. That makes 18 straight months that the Xbox 360 has been the best-selling console in the US.
