New study from research group finds PlayStation 3 owners in US in 2012 spent majority of their time with video services, not games.

PlayStation 3 owners in 2012 spent more time with non-gaming media services than they did actually playing games, according to a new Nielsen study based on responses from more than 2,500 consumers in the United States.

The research group found that video-on-demand and streaming viewing through PS3 jumped from 15 percent to 24 percent for the year. Add to that time spent watching DVDs/Blu-rays (15 percent), watching downloaded movies/TV shows (4 percent), and all other uses (8 percent), and PS3 owners in 2012 actually spent most of their time not playing games through the console.

The study found PS3 gamers spent 28 percent of their time playing offline video games and 18 percent playing online games. Overall, PS3 owners spent 46 percent of their time in 2012 playing games and 54 percent with non-gaming media services.

Video streaming was most popular on Wii, accounting for 32 percent of time spent on the platform. Microsoft came in last for video streaming, with users spending 13 percent of their time watching on-demand content through the system. The PS3 was the only platform to see gains in video-on-demand viewing.

Overall, video-on-demand and streaming viewership across Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii stood at 22 percent, up from 19 percent a year earlier.

Research group’s annual holiday non-PC study finds Halo 4 ranks highest with Xbox 360 gamers, new Call of Duty for PS3 users, and Just Dance 4 for the Wii crowd.

The 2012 holiday season is closing in and according to research group Nielsen, sequels Halo 4, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, and Just Dance 4 are the season’s most-anticipated games for consoles.

The research group released its annual holiday wish list study today, revealing Xbox 360 gamers have shown the most interest in Halo 4, but only by a narrow margin over Black Ops II.

PlayStation 3 gamers are most eagerly anticipating Black Ops II, the study found, with Assassin’s Creed III in a close second. As for Wii players, Ubisoft’s Just Dance 4 proved the most desirable for that platform, on top of Zumba Fitness Core in second.

The full top-ten lists for each platform are below. They are based on Nielsen’s “Game Rank,” which is the result of the firm combining “key consumer metrics” like awareness and purchase interest into a total rank, and then comparing it to scores for previously released games on the same platform. This is represented in a percentile ranking, denoted in the chart below.

Of note, NBA 2K13 and WWE ’13 are the only two titles to rank in the top ten for all three platforms. Additionally, holiday 2012′s most-desired titles are all sequels to existing franchises. Lastly, Nielsen said Dishonored “narrowly” missed a top ten spot, possibly due to the general gaming public not being “acutely aware” of the game amidst a heap of sequels.

Nielsen’s list was based on data collected between September 9 and October 6, 2012 through online surveys of more than 4,800 males and female “active” gamers between ages 7 and 54. Respondents needed to own at least one current generation console and “actively” play and purchase games on that system to qualify for inclusion in the survey.

Below are Nielsen’s most-anticipated holiday 2012 titles, denoted by platform. Italicized titles are platform-exclusives.

Activision’s shooter leads tracking company’s survey of most anticipated titles, followed by Gears of War 3, Madden NFL 12.

This holiday season sees the release of numerous high-profile titles, and according to tracking firm Nielsen, Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the most wanted game of all.

Nielsen recently published its “Top 20 Games to Watch” and the Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games-developed shooter topped all others by a significant margin. According to Nielsen, 27 percent of respondents designated Modern Warfare 3 as one of the top five titles they intend to purchase during the 2011 holiday season.

The next two most coveted games of the season, based on Nielsen’s data, are the recently released Gears of War 3 and Madden NFL 12. Both games found their way onto 19 percent of respondents’ lists.

Just one title on the list–Dead Island–is a new intellectual property. All others are either sequels or extensions of existing franchises.

Other games making the list include forthcoming titles Assassin’s Creed: Revelations (17 percent), Batman: Arkham City (15 percent), The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (14 percent), and Battlefield 3 (12 percent).

Nielsen’s online survey of what it calls “active gamers,” was conducted from August 21 to September 17 of this year. Supplemental information was provided by Nielsen company NM Incite, which mined more than 417 million online conversations about the top 20 games to determine the top factors for hype.

According to NM Incite, Modern Warfare 3 conversations tended to be centered on launch parties, changes to the game, a “darker mood,” and the difference between the Hardened version and its standard counterpart. Gamers excited about Assassin’s Creed: Revelations are interested in the game’s multiplayer component. Further, based on the firm’s findings, gamers enthusiastic about Batman: Arkham City are interested in finding out which villains they will face.
