With just days to go before the PlayStation 4 is released in North America, Sony has come out to say meeting analysts’ sales estimates of 3 million units by year-end won’t be a problem.
“We’re very comfortable with it,” SCEA CEO Jack Tretton told Bloomberg. “I’m excited about next week to be able to talk about what was sold as opposed to what we may sell.”
Tretton added that Sony will have “adequate” supplies of the 9 PS4 through the holiday season. He also confirmed that Sony is sticking by its projection to sell 5 million PS4s by the end of March, 2014.
“This is a marathon, not a sprint, but getting out to a nice start is a good thing,” Tretton said. “That hurdle has been cleared. We’re very, very confident we’re in great shape.”
The PS4 will be released in North America on November 15, followed by Europe on November 29. In all, the PS4 will be available in 32 countries around the world in time for the holidays.

Gamers looking to purchase multiple PlayStation 4 titles at launch may want to consider a supposed deal from retailer Target. A leaked Target advertisement posted on Reddit suggests the company will offer a buy two, get one free deal on PS4 titles during launch week.
The Target flyer states that the promotion is available in-store only, and only applies to a handful of PS4 launch titles. Eligible titles include FIFA 14, Killzone: Shadow Fall, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Knack, Madden NFL 25, Battlefield 4, and NBA 2K14.
According to the advertisement, the three titles must be different, and the lowest-priced game will be free. The promotion is reportedly valid November 10-16. It is unclear if other retailers will match Target’s offer.
The PS4 launches in North America on November 15 and in Europe on November 29. Launch title Killzone: Shadow Fall, as well as accessories like the DualShock 4 and PlayStation Camera, are already available for purchase at GameStop.
The PlayStation 4 will allow users to identify themselves by their real names for the system’s online service at launch, Sony confirmed today with Kotaku. Doing so will be optional.
Last week, Microsoft revealed that though it plans to give users the option of identifying themselves by their real names, this feature will not be available at launch.
“Our teams are working hard to deliver a quality experience for Xbox One. This means prioritizing some features and sometimes postponing others for a later update,” a Microsoft representative said at the time.
On current consoles like the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U, players are identifiable through nicknames of their choosing. The PS4 and Xbox One will be the first mainstream consoles that allow users to seen by the public by their birth names.
The PS4 launches in three weeks on November 15 in North America, while the Xbox One will debut a week later on November 22.
